A larger skylight can have a substantial effect on a room, but size is only one consideration. Roof structure, positioning, shaft dimensions and how daylight will spread through the room all need to be considered together.

The Block 2026 Family Bathroom Reveals: Natural Light, Ventilation and Privacy
This week’s family bathroom reveals showed two different ways to use natural light from above.
Courtney & Sev in House 4 made a large fixed VELUX skylight part of the room’s design, while Rick and Tayla in House 5 combined daylight with the ability to bring fresh air into the bathroom.
Both approaches show why bathrooms can be particularly well suited to skylights, where natural light and privacy often need to work together.
Making natural light part of the design
HOUSE 4
Courtney and Sev’s winning family bathroom features one large VELUX Flat Roof Fixed Skylight positioned above the space.
Rather than treating the skylight as an addition to the room, the large opening and lightwell make daylight part of the overall design.
Bringing light in from above helps the bathroom feel brighter and more open while retaining privacy at wall level.
Combining daylight with ventilation
For bathrooms, the choice between a fixed and opening skylight depends on more than daylight alone. Existing ventilation, room layout, roof access and how the bathroom is used can all affect whether an opening skylight provides useful additional value.
HOUSE 5
Rick and Tayla took a different approach in House 5, using a VELUX Flat Roof Solar Skylight.
As well as introducing daylight from above, an opening skylight can provide additional ventilation, an important consideration in bathrooms where showering regularly creates warm, humid air.
The position of a skylight also allows natural light and ventilation to be introduced without relying on a conventional window at eye level, helping retain bathroom privacy.
