Week 11 – Hallways

The Block 2026 Hallway Reveals: Shining a Light on Overlooked Spaces

Hallways, entries and stairwells are some of the busiest areas of a home, yet natural lighting is often overlooked in their design. While kitchens and living areas receive plenty of attention, the spaces connecting them can be left feeling dark and enclosed.

In Week 11 of The Block 2026, all five teams used VELUX fixed skylights to bring daylight into these often-overlooked spaces.

From illuminating architectural features to bringing daylight into areas where conventional windows are limited, the reveals show what thoughtful skylight placement can achieve.

The Block 2026 Hallway Reveals: Shining a Light on Overlooked Spaces

When daylight can't come from the sides

Not every part of a home has access to an external window. Hallways and stairwells can be particularly challenging, especially where neighbouring buildings or privacy screening restrict natural light.

Houses 1, 2 and 3 faced exactly this challenge. Each team installed five VELUX fixed skylights above their stairwell, bringing daylight directly into spaces that would otherwise have limited natural light.

HOUSE 1 – Adam & Jolene

Adam and Jolene’s stairwell features five VELUX FCM 3446 fixed skylights that bring daylight down onto the textured walls and interior finishes.

The natural light helps highlight these design details, making the stairwell an architectural feature rather than simply a way to move between floors.

It’s a good example of how skylight placement can influence more than brightness. Where the light falls can be just as important as how much enters the space.

House 2: Chantel & Wyatt

With screening restricting daylight from the sides of the home, Chantel and Wyatt’s five VELUX FCM 3446 fixed skylights introduce natural light directly above their stairwell.

The result is a bright, open-feeling space despite the limitations of conventional windows.

Similar challenges can arise in existing homes with neighbouring buildings, privacy screening or internal staircases. Bringing daylight through the roof can offer a practical alternative when external windows aren’t an option.

HOUSE 3 – Lisa & Rosco

Lisa and Rosco also incorporated five VELUX FCM 3446 fixed skylights above their staircase, creating a series of openings that contribute to the overall interior design.

Multiple skylights can help distribute daylight along a space rather than concentrating it in one location.

For installations like this, the spacing and alignment of skylights deserve careful attention. The roof structure, ceiling openings and any light shafts all need to work together to achieve a cohesive finished result.

Looking at the bigger picture

Skylights can do more than brighten an individual room. When positioned thoughtfully, they can help bring daylight into connecting spaces and contribute to a more cohesive interior design.

Houses 4 and 5 demonstrate different aspects of this approach, from managing sunlight with blinds to considering how daylight reaches adjoining rooms.

HOUSE 5 – Rick & Tayla

Rick and Tayla took a broader approach, incorporating three VELUX FCM 4646 fixed skylights, along with an additional VELUX FCM 3446 fixed skylight downstairs.

Rather than considering each room in isolation, the design demonstrates how skylight placement can contribute to the overall experience of moving through a home.

For homeowners planning a renovation or new build, looking at the relationship between connected spaces can reveal opportunities to introduce natural light where it might otherwise be overlooked.

HOUSE 4 – Courtney & Sev

Courtney and Sev chose three VELUX FCM 4646 fixed skylights paired with honeycomb blackout blinds.

While the skylights bring natural light into the kitchen and connecting spaces, the blinds provide flexibility to control incoming daylight and help manage solar heat gain.

It’s a useful reminder that skylight accessories are worth considering during the planning stage, particularly where direct sunlight or glare may affect how a space is used.
