The Block 2026 Walk-In Robe Reveals: Bringing Natural Light Into Every Part of the Home
Natural light does not have to be reserved for kitchens and living spaces. In this week’s walk-in robe reveals, all five teams used VELUX fixed skylights to bring daylight into spaces that might otherwise rely heavily on artificial light.
The results also show that there is no single formula for skylight placement. Roof structure, room proportions and the desired visual effect all influenced how the skylights were used.
Working with the roof structure
HOUSE 1
The walk-in robes in Houses 1 and 2 presented a practical challenge, with a roof truss running through the centre of the space. Rather than forcing a symmetrical layout, two VELUX fixed skylights were positioned to work around the existing structure.
HOUSE 2
It is a useful reminder that skylight placement needs to respond to what is happening above the ceiling as well as the layout below it.
Bringing daylight into a functional space
A darker room does not automatically need the largest skylight available. Skylight size, glazing area, shaft design and room proportions all affect the final daylight result.
HOUSE 3
House 3 shows how natural light can change the feel of a room that is often treated as purely functional. Bringing daylight from above helps the walk-in robe feel brighter, more comfortable and more connected to the rest of the home.
Making the skylights part of the architecture
With multiple skylights, spacing matters. The aim is usually to distribute daylight effectively through the room rather than simply add more roof openings.
HOUSES 4 & 5
Houses 4 and 5 take a different approach, using three fixed skylights across relatively narrow walk-in robes. Rather than simply providing extra light, the skylights become a strong visual feature running through the ceiling.
The repeated openings help distribute daylight along the length of each room and make the narrow spaces feel more open.
